Tax Refunds while Overseas
Individuals on working visas, and expatriate Australians, often leave Australia without completing a tax return for the appropriate year(s) of income and therefore forgoe a tax refund in many circumstances. However, you can easily initiate the process of completing a return whilst you are overseas by submitting the Inquiry form located at the bottom of this page.
Note that in order to have the tax return completed on your behalf you will need to be able to provide the following information:
- Your full name
- Date of Birth
- Tax File Number (TFN)
- Address for correspondence
- Payment Summary Forms (PAYG) covering the tax return period
- Details of Occupation(s) when working in Australia
- Details of any other income you may have earned, for example bank interest and dividends, you may have received from Australian banks or companies
- Details of any work related expenses, such as professional subscriptions or tools of trade, that you may incurred.
- How you wish to receive any refund; the Australian Tax Office can direct credit a local bank account or provide payment via a cheque.
The standard fee for completion of a personal tax return by AWA, a registered tax accountant, is $A320 plus GST. If there are complexities associated with your particular return – for example your return includes real estate investment income and expenses – then please indicate this on the Inquiry form and you will advised what, if any, impact this has on the applicable fee.
