Australian Tax File Numbers (TFN’s)

We regularly receive inquiries regarding individual Tax File Numbers (TFN’s). These can be from expatriates wanting details of their previous TFN’s, or would-be immigrants or individuals on working visas wishing to arrange a TFN in advance of arriving in Australia.  Applications for TFN details must be made through the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and we provide details of the relevant web addresses below. Please note that Exfin cannot provide assistance in terms of making applications for a TFN, or retrieving a lost TFN - all these inquiries must be made directly to the ATO.

A. Non-Resident Australians seeking TFN Details

The ATO has a process for providing non-resident Australians with their TFN; you will find it at the web address provided below:

If you are a permanent migrant or temporary visitor to Australia and have a visa to work in Australia or remain in Australia you can apply online at www.ato.gov.au for a new TFN.  If you apply online there is no need to provide physical of identity – please follow the address below:

C. General Tax file number Application or enquiry for a Resident Australian

Use this form if :

• You have a tax file number but cannot find it on any of your tax papers, or
• You are not sure if you have a TFN, or
• You never had a TFN
